Ancient symbols from Calchaqui (Northwestern Argentina). An archaeology of pre-Columbian cosmologies

Mittwoch, 11. Mai 2011, 18.30 Uhr
Vortrag in englischer Sprache von Dr. Javier Nastri, Universidad de Maimonides, Buenos Aires. Calchaquí´s symbolism is one of the most elaborated iconological systems of representations from the Andean world. It was developed between IX and XVII centuries after Christ in the arid valleys from the Northwest of Argentina, in Catamarca, Tucumán and Salta provinces. Among its material supports are metals, pottery, textiles, basketry and rock art. Through the iconographic analysis of a vast sample of funerary urns, together with the excavation of a variety of archaeological settlements, an anthropological interpretation of Calchaqui cosmology is presented, with especial focus in the relation between practices and representations and their changes along the times. An original world is reveled, comprising social strategies, artistic genres and historical transformations.
